Between Prospects and Reserves is a project that grew out of a desire to better understand the psychological effects of an extended and ongoing period of military conflict. A combination of research and personal connections led me to explore, specifically, the impact of war on the lives of military families in the United States. Over the period of six months in late 2009, I interviewed spouses and families of deployed soldiers in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During this time I listened to many stories chronicling diverse experiences of domestic life on base. This version of the installation, which included video, text, and photographs presents a fragmented narrative addressing tensions between imagined and actual realities of joining the military. In particular, this work highlights the influence of cultural representations of war (in the form of cinema and toys) on psychological preconceptions of military life.
