This project, entitled LIMBO, takes the concept of the Anthropocene as a framework for thinking about the human relationship to the more-than-human world. Drawing on parallels between the mechanisms of photography and the the museological practice of staging dioramas for the production of knowledge, this installation sets up its own scripted space. Large scale photographs flank the walls, bringing the subjects to a human scale and emphasizing the visceral physicality of the animals on display. In the center of the space is a pedestal supporting a handmade poplar box with preserved leaves and grass. A silent optical projection of a butterfly flutters on the surface of an etched glass crystal globe. Encased in a glass dome, this sculpture reflects on its own enclosure and questions the cultural values involved with the ways in which institutions mediate our understanding of “nature.”
